LPN to RN Masthead

ABOUT THE NYS LPN TO RN ARTICULATION MODEL

FOCUS OF THE NYS LPN TO RN MODEL

The New York State LPN to RN Articulation Model establishes a mechanism for the practical nurse to achieve educational mobility by eliminating barriers in nursing educational programs in New York State. NYSLRAM uses the statewide PN to RN Transition Course to validate previous knowledge and to determine advanced placement within an RN program. This method is expedient and cost-effective for both the participating student and the receiving institutions.

PURPOSE OF THE MODEL

The health care needs of the multicultural population of New York State demand an increase in the supply of registered nurses. One method of addressing this need is to increase opportunities for educational mobility for nurses in the workforce. A statewide educational articulation model provides an opportunity for a career ladder in nursing. This model is a process that allows nursing education programs to avoid unnecessary gaps or duplication of prior learning. In addition, the New York State LPN to RN Articulation Model facilitates educational mobility for licensed practical nurses by eliminating unnecessary programmatic barriers. The model was developed though a collaborative effort of the New York State Coalition for Educational Mobility, consisting of Practical, Associate, and Baccalaureate Nurse Educators and members of The New York State Nurses Association.

ASSUMPTIONS UNDERLYING THE NYS LPN TO RN ARTICULATION MODEL

The logic of implementing a New York State LPN to RN articulation model is based on the following:

1. Nursing is a dynamic profession committed to life long learning across the continuum of nursing education and practice.

2. There is an inherent value and worth in each of the differing roles and competencies of all nurses and each is valued for its uniqueness.

3. Each participating educational institution establishes its unique mission, goals and standards for admission, progression and graduation.

4. There is a common core of knowledge, attitudes, cognitive and psychomotor skills that graduates of all nursing programs must acquire.

5. The knowledge and skills of practical nurses are valued and can be validated and enhanced through the New York State Practical Nurse to Registered Nurse Transition course.

6. Articulation is a process through which nursing programs cooperate to facilitate educational progression of students with minimal repetition.

7. All nursing programs must meet the New York State Education Department regulations.
